About Darn Tough

Warranty program

What does your warranty cover?

Darn Tough socks are guaranteed to be the most comfortable, durable, and best fitting socks you can buy. Simply put, if you get a hole in them, we'll replace them for free, for life.

Things that generally aren't covered: Disappeared in the dryer, dog ate them, too close to a campfire, theft by friends or enemies, etc., etc. However, all claims made in good faith will be considered.

Please note that socks purchased outside of official distributors are not covered by the warranty.

What is not covered by warranty?

The warranty does not cover the washing machine "eating" a sock or your pet liking your socks so much that it destroys them or burning them in a bonfire... In any case, tell us about the case and we will look at it with affection :).

My socks, after wearing them for years, have developed a hole. Is this case covered by warranty?

Yes of course. The Darn Tough warranty covers wear and tear for life.

How do I file a warranty claim?

For customers who have purchased socks on our website, they must fill out our warranty form and send us a photo showing the general condition of the socks and another with the defect.

We will then send you a credit code for the full value of the replacement to use on our website to purchase the sock of your choice.

For socks purchased outside of our website, you must fill out our warranty form and send us the socks for review.

Once received and analyzed that they are original, an email will be sent with a credit code for the amount of the replacement to buy another pair on our website.

How long does it take to receive credit after returning my socks?

We strive to process your claims within 2-10 business days of receiving your socks. During peak season, it may take a little longer.

In the event that I have not purchased the socks on your website, can you send warranty replacement socks before sending my worn socks?

Our policy is that we first receive socks to be replaced before issuing credit for new pairs.

Does your warranty include replacing lost socks? Would you just sell me a sock?

While quite comprehensive, our warranty does not cover lost socks, and we do not sell individual socks. Our guarantee applies to socks that have not met expectations related to comfort, durability and fit.

Does the warranty apply if I dye my socks or cut the socks?

No, when a customer alters the sock in any way the warranty is voided.

Can I ship multiple pairs in a single warranty claim?

Yes, you can send multiple pairs.

Sock product and care

How do I wash my Darn Tough merino wool socks?

Merino wool washing instructions.

  1. Turn your socks inside out.
  2. Wash in cold water on the gentle cycle.
  3. Choose a mild detergent with a neutral pH.
  4. Tumble dry on low or air dry.

What not to do

  • Do not dry clean.
  • Do not use bleach.
  • Do not use fabric softener.
  • Do not iron.
  • Do not wash so frequently.

After washing socks, how do I store them?

If you really want to pamper your socks, choose to fold the socks and not roll one over the other as it stretches the socks unnecessarily.

How often should you wash wool socks?

Merino wool socks do not need to be washed as often. You can easily wear them 2-3 times before washing. The need to wash them will be determined more by the degree of sweating of your feet and the activity to be carried out. There are clients whose socks last "fresh" for more than a week.

Do you wash socks in hot or cold water?

Wash your wool socks in cold water. Never use hot water as it can weaken the fabric fibers and fade the colors.

Should socks be washed inside out?

Yes, turn your socks inside out before washing them to clean sweat and dead skin cells from your feet.

Can you use a dryer to dry wool socks?

Yes, you can dry your socks in the dryer but at low temperature.

Can socks be washed with clothes?

Follow the washing instructions for your socks. If the clothes you are washing can use the same setting, you can wash them together.

Do Darn Tough socks shrink?

No, Darn Tough socks do not shrink. The socks are already pre-washed and shrunken so they don't shrink for the customer. It is possible that after washing them they feel tighter but once they are worn the stitch recovers.

The socks are too big for me and I need to shrink them. Can they be shrunk by washing them in hot water?

If the socks are too big for you and you have worn them, use the warranty form. Socks cannot shrink by washing them in hot water.

Why do my socks wear out in the same place?

Everyone's feet are different, generally speaking, if a person has pressure points, a sock is more likely to wear out in that area.

One solution is to use Gehwol Footcreme .

But don't worry, if the Darn Tough socks get a hole, you can take advantage of the lifetime warranty and replace them with others.

Is the merino wool used in Darn Tough socks mulesing free?

Of course. Mulesing is a practice that we hate. Therefore rest assured that Darn Tough socks are free of mulesing.

What happens when I have doubts between two sizes?

If you have doubts between two sizes, it means that if you have a foot with a normal width, both sizes will work for you and it will depend a little on your personal taste, tighter or looser.

If your foot is wide, I suggest that you choose the larger size and if you have a narrow foot, the smaller size.

Are women's socks suitable for men and vice versa?

Yes, it will depend more on the shape of your foot than on gender.

In other words, there are women who have wide feet and men's socks look better on them, and men who have small, narrow feet and women's socks look better on them.

What is the difference between the heights of your socks?

Darn Tough socks come in various heights.

These range from:

Invisible that reaches approximately the height of a normal shoe.

Ankle strap that reaches above the ankle.

Ankle high is higher than the anklet. Perfect with low boots.

Boot/Crew The height of the boot is a little higher than the crew but we have grouped them in the same group since both are ideal for use with boots or in the case of the crew height it is used in the sock for the day a day.

Below the knee is the maximum height, below the knee.

What are the different weight options for your socks?

Sock weight (or yarn weight) refers to the fineness/thickness of the yarn used in the knit. We currently have 4 different sock weights; From lightest to heaviest, they are Ultralight, Lightweight, Midweight, and Heavyweight.

These combine with our 3 levels of cushioning to create a range of support, warmth and comfort in our socks. Try different combinations of padding and weight to find the perfect balance for you.

What are the different cushioning levels of your socks?

The padding of the sock is created by knitted plush loops. Padding provides additional protection in high impact areas, shock absorption, extra warmth and comfort. Our 3 levels of cushioning are No cushioning, cushioning and full cushioning.

Some of our ski and snowboard socks have cushioning in the shin as well as the foot. In the work category, there are also specific socks for steel toe shoes with extended cushioning in the toe box.

Does Darn Tough make 100% wool socks?

No, Darn Tough does not make socks that are 100% wool; Instead, it uses three simple materials (Merino wool, nylon and lycra) to give our socks their signature fit and durability. All wool socks include some nylon to increase durability and lycra to improve comfort and fit.

Are Coolmax socks for summer?

Coolmax is a brand of synthetic fiber that Darn Tough uses in non-merino wool socks. This fiber mimics the same performance properties as merino wool.

It is a good alternative for those allergic to wool or for those looking for vegan socks.

Does Darn Tough have vegan socks?

Yes, all socks that do not have merino wool are vegan.

The materials used are Coolmax or Thermolite.

What is the thickest, warmest sock you make?

The thickest and warmest socks we have are our heavy yarn socks. Mountaineering socks are 25% thicker than our standard cushion socks and are available in high ankle height, boot height and below the knee with cushioning throughout the sock.
