The complete route of the Central Portuguese Way
The Central Portuguese Way is the most important Camino de Santiago route starting in Lisbon. Its main starting points are Lisbon, Porto, and Tui. It is the second most popular route after the French Way. There are several Portuguese variants, such as the Inland Way and the Coastal Way.
Stages from Lisbon
The path starts from Lisbon Cathedral and passes through towns such as Vila Franca de Xira, Santarém, Tomar, Coimbra, and Porto. It consists of 9 stages with distances between 11 and 34 km.
Some highlights include:
- Santarém: Riverside city with a historic center of Roman origin.
- Tomar: Town with a Templar castle and a 12th-century convent.
- Coimbra: University city on the banks of the Mondego River with a cathedral and historic monuments.
Stages from Porto
From Porto, there are 3 stages to Tui, passing through Vilarinho, Barcelos, and Ponte de Lima. Their distances range from 17 to 35 km.
Places of interest:
- Ponte de Lima: Medieval town with a Roman bridge over the Lima River.
- Barcelos: Features its square with a stone cross called "Cruz dos Farrapos".
Stages from Tui
From Tui to Santiago, there are 5 stages passing through Redondela, Pontevedra, Caldas de Reis, and Padrón. Their distances are between 18 and 32 km.
Emblematic points:
- Redondela: Town with a medieval viaduct of thirteen arches.
- Pontevedra: Monumental city on the banks of the Lérez at the mouth of the river.
- Padrón: Town linked to the legend of the landing of the stone boat with the body of the Apostle Saint James.
The Central Portuguese Way ends at Santiago de Compostela Cathedral, covering more than 115 km from Tui. Buen camino!
